Domaine du Pech d'André is a 2-bedroomed cottage, sleeping 4 (+ baby), in a rural setting, 1.5km S of Azillanet (Hérault), 3km N of Olonzac, 12km N of Lézignan, 34km NW of Narbonne, 40km NE of Carcassonne and 43km W of Béziers (Michelin maps: 525/526). VFB is delighted to have featured this property since 1982. Saturday arrival.
Formed from part of the dépendances of the friendly owners’ large 18th-century house on a private wine-producing estate, this charming little property stands in native pinède amid vineyards in gently undulating countryside just 5km from the ancient Cathar town of Minerve. The interior is simply converted and fitted; decorated with rustic rendering throughout, it is furnished with some period items and is fairly comfortable to provide “no nonsense” accommodation. Like many an old house it has its idiosyncrasies: low headroom in places and uneven floors. The main attraction here, however, is the 5 acres of grounds, with mature pine trees, a large gravel and grassy area, with swings and a pool (11m50 x 5m50, depth: 1m20 – 2m25) shared with the owners and occupants of adjoining holiday accommodation (not let through VFB, with independent parking and access). From one end of the grounds extend lovely views, through trees, over the owners’ vineyards, to the hills of the Haut Languedoc. The owners keep free-range chickens (and peacocks!) and two dogs (one a cocker spaniel, the other a setter / labrador cross). About once a fortnight, they receive a group (up to 20) for tastings and a brief picnic lunch near the pool; VFB guests are invited to join the tasting session. Unpretentious character accommodation in an ideal setting for visiting some of the archeological and other historic sites in this impressive region, including Carcassonne, with its spectacular ramparts and towers, and Béziers.
Accommodation: Ground floor: kitchen/living/dining room (with open fireplace), shower room with wc. First floor: 1 twin and 1 double-bedded room
