La Borie is a 3-bedroomed cottage, sleeping 6 (+ baby), 3km from the hamlet of St-Jean-d’Estissac (Dordogne), 4km from Villamblard, 24km N of Bergerac (Michelin maps: 521 / 522 / 525). VFB is delighted to have featured this property since 1999. Saturday arrival.
Situated in a small rural hamlet, this is a delightful detached property, dating from the 18th century, in the same picturesque ensemble of buildings as La Grande Borie but set away from it, facing its own open, attractively arranged garden with an ornamental covered well. The high standard of restoration has resulted in quality accommodation; fine stone and brickwork, stone sinks and exposed roof timbers create an impressive rustic framework for the quality, local-style, and modern furniture. The well-maintained interior is kept cool thanks to thick stone walls and the original small windows (picturesque, but at the cost of light). The appealing outdoor facilities include a very well-kept grassy garden with shady trees, open to a quiet country lane, and a private swimming pool (8m x 4m, depth 1m50) set in a sunny terrace (2 steps down) and partly screened by a wall. An ideal setting for eating (built-in barbecue) and relaxing outside. La Borie enjoys peaceful surroundings, and guests may wander in the owner's surrounding grounds and woods. The property is situated some 25m from La Grande Borie and another neighbour (and their dog) some 45m away and screened by trees. The charming owner is retired and lives in Beauronne, 15km away; she will personally welcome all visitors. Well-situated for visits to the attractive old quarters of Bergerac, and its extensive vineyards, châteaux at Bourdeilles and St-Astier; and Périgueux with its Renaissance town houses and domed cathedral, the lower valley of the Dordogne and bastide towns. A lovely old property, full of traditional character with the major asset that little intrudes on the tranquillity of this largely wooded hilltop setting.
Accommodation: Ground floor: kitchen/dining room (with open fireplace), living room (with open fireplace), shower room with wc. First floor: 1 twin and 2 double-bedded rooms, bathroom, separate wc, cot.
Activities: Private swimming-pool (available May – September). Tennis and bicycle hire in Villamblard. Horse riding in Mussidan (13km). Golf (9 holes) in Périgueux (30km). Canoe/kayak at Ste Foy-la-Grande (35km), Mussidan and Bergerac.
Services: All essential shops and services in Villamblard. Market in Villamblard on Mondays, in Mussidan on Saturdays, in St Astier (15km) on Thursdays, in Périgueux on Wednesdays and Bergerac on Wednesdays and Saturdays and Riberac on Fridays.
