La Rouquette is a 2-bedroomed farmhouse, sleeping 4 (+ baby), in a rural location, 2.5km from the village of Calvinet (Cantal), 18km E of Maurs, 35km SSW of Aurillac (Michelin map: 522). VFB is delighted to have featured this property since 1999. Saturday arrival.
Dating back to the 16th century, this detached former farmhouse, converted in 1996, stands in its own garden, behind the owners’ manor farm surrounded by fields and pastures. Behind the old Cantalais stonework and lauzes (traditional stone-tiled) roof of this charming house is an interior of character where white walls and an uncluttered approach to décor and furnishings create a spacious, relaxing atmosphere. Beams, stone niches and the original fireplace have been retained, while the unelaborate but tasteful furniture is largely modern. Apart from the simply fitted kitchen, the appealing accommodation has been newly fitted and arranged with holidays in mind. At the rear, a private grassy garden, screened by hedges and partly shaded by a mature walnut tree, provides a pleasant spot for outdoor living. The setting is secluded with the nearest neighbours being the charming owners and their children, whose sitting out area is out of sight some 40m away; adjacent are a few farm buildings mostly used for storage. The owners, who speak some English, live here all year round and they will welcome all visitors. Local places of interest include the upper Lot with its picturesque riverside villages and scenic gorges of the Truyère, splendid Conques and its 11th/12th-century abbatiale, the Monts du Cantal beyond Aurillac and high plateaux of Aubrac. An appealing traditional house with spacious, interior in lovely hilly countryside.
